Maximum weight: 2275kg (5000lb)

Current I.G.F.A all time record: 1208.38kg - Alfred Dean - Ceduna, Australia - 21/04/59

Identifying features: Five gill slits, upper body dark to light grey, lower body is white. Species has a large, predominate caudal keel. Pectoral fins sometimes have black tips.

Classic aggressive posture
Typical location: Open waters over reefs and along continental shelf amongst current lines. Can be found with  pods of migrating whales and schools of tuna. A prime location to found this species is around islands and headlands which host seal colonies, as a result it shows no caution about coming very close to shore.

Fighting characteristics: Has been known to jump but usually is a midwater fighter. Please see "Protected areas".

Protected areas: Due to the massive decline in numbers this species in protected in the following - South Africa, some states Australia - New South Wales, South Australia.
